Mattamuskeet Apple

Mattamuskeet originated in coastal North Carolina prior to 1858. Legend has that it grew from a seed found in the gizzard of a wild goose by the Mattamuskeet Indians. It grows well in the warmer coastal plain. It is an excellent keeper without refrigeration. The skin is tough, greenish-yellow covered with a rusty red coat. The flesh is firm, pale yellow, moderately juicy and a bit tart when first picked. The flavor mellows in storage.
